«My juicer is not meant to squeeze lemons; it is meant to start conversations». Philippe Starck

Every self-respecting designer knows this object. Juicy Salif was developed by Philippe Starck in 1990 for Alessi, and became one of the most recognizable kitchenware objects of all times, and definitely the most famous lemon squeezer. Well known fact is that the first sketches of this design miracle were drawn by Philippe Starck on a napkin in pizzeria, and we should say, that it was the real insight and Juicy Salif hardly changed from those first drawings.

We can’t say, that Juicy Salif is a very innovative design piece, but it’s fame and popularity are proving that there is something extremely special about it. Streamline cosmic shape + shiny surface + (most important) special and satisfying feeling of dripping juice – all those things together are creating a beautiful ritual from the simplest action and make us enjoy it a lot.

It is one of the most important aspects of design – to make people enjoy their lives, isn’t it?

You can’t argue that Juicy Salif is absolutely beautiful. More than that, it feels like the it’s form is absolutely perfect. Let’s figure out what provokes this feeling.

Two words – Golden ratio. Each section is built accordingly to the Golden ratio proportions. Attention point is right in the center of a whole composition. Legs extremums are on the exact intersections of the Golden ratio with diagonals.

Golden ratio is an evolutionary thing – we feel it subconsciously.

Philippe Starck is a design genius and of course he knows and uses it wisely in his projects.
