Trackball hit – Mitsumi ECM-S3102

| Eng This mouse was mass-produced by Mitsumi Electric in the middle 90s and was widely popular because at the time it was modern and cheap. As you might notice, it’s a 2 button mouse without scroll. What you can’t recognize from this photo, is that this is not an optical mouse we used to see nowadays. It’s a trackball technology mouse – it uses a ball held by a socket containing sensors to detect a rotation of the ball about two axes. This technology was popular before the optical mouses were invented. But it has a serious disadvantage – trackball socket was becoming dirty quickly and often required dissembling and cleaning. So when optical mouses were invented, they quickly pushed the trackball mouses out of the market. I should mention that Mitsumi ECM-S3102 has a great ergonomics. It’s large enough and has a great surface curvature that makes the hand relax on it. In addition, the left button is covered in small relief dots to help user faster recognize left from the right button. It might seem unnecessary or even funny, but I love the idea – this pattern makes Mitsumi mouses of that time stand out and gives a very satisfying tactile experience. |

Как вы можете заметить, это 2-кнопочная мышь без скрола. То, чего не видно по этой фотографии – это не оптическая мышь, к которым мы привыкли на данный момент. Это мышь с трекболом – в ней используется шарик, удерживаемый гнездом, содержащим датчики, который считывает повороты шарика относительно двух осей. Эта технология была популярна до изобретения оптических мышей. У него есть серьезный недостаток – трекбольная розетка быстро забивается и часто требует разборки и очистки. Это основная причина почему оптические мыши быстро вытеснили трэкбольные мыши с рынка. Стоит отметить, что Mitsumi ECM-S3102 обладает прекрасной эргономикой. Она достаточно крупная и имеет отличный изгиб поверхности, что помогает руке чувствовать себя расслабленно. Кроме того, левая кнопка покрыта небольшими рельефными точками, чтобы помочь пользователю быстрее распознать левую и правую кнопки. Это может показаться лишним или даже смешным, но мне нравится идея – эта текстура отличает мыши Mitsumi того времени и придает им очень приятные тактильные ощущения. |
