Anglepoise – it's all about balance

| Eng Anglepoise® lamp is timeless classic of product design. It was developed by the British car engineer George Carwardine in 1931, and then registered and mass produced from 1933. Back then the lamp was using 4 springs, but in 1935 George Carwardine simplified it and made a model, that required only 3 springs. This lamp is special, Carwardine’s invention of a constant spring mechanism made the lamp stable, but yet transformable. Anglepoise® is still producing in the same design of 1935. Isn’t it amazing? This lamp is a real time-tested masterpiece. Moreover, the Carwardine’s spring mechanism inspired a huge number of designs from different spheres of life, not only the lamp making. This is an example, how the simple domestic thing design can push the world forward. |
Рус Anglepoise® – классика предметного дизайна. Она был разработана британским автомобильным инженером Джорджем Карвардином в 1931 году, а затем была запатентована, и выпускается с 1933 года. Тогда лампа использовала 4 пружины, но в 1935 году Джордж Карвардин усовершенствовал ее и сделал модель, использующую всего 3 пружины. Эта лампа особенная, изобретенный Карвардином постоянный пружинный механизм сделал лампу устойчивой, но при этом подвижной. Anglepoise® все еще производится в том же дизайне, что и в 1935 году. | Composition To be honest, there is almost nothing to analyze in this lamp from the compositional side – it is so transformable, it’s 100% function – nothing is made only for the beauty sake. And I’m sure, that this is the key why the design made in 30s is still so popular and modern looking. Aesthetics is constantly changing, but the beauty of functionality is timeless. Despite that, Anglepoise® appearance has a several moments to dive into. This lamp is all about balance not only in it’s function, but in appearance too. I compared the base measurements with the lampshade. Main width of the lampshade is equal to the base width – you can see this with the naked eye. But other 3 measurements I took, are also duplicating each other. This is such a small touch of pure aesthetic in Anglepoise®, but anyway, it was made thoughtfully. |
Композиция Честно говоря, в этой лампе практически нечего анализировать с композиционной точки зрения – она настолько трансформируема, на 100% является воплощением функциональности – в ней нет ничего, что было бы сделано исключительно ради красоты. И я уверена, что это ключ к тому, что дизайн, сделанный в 30-х годах, по-прежнему так популярен и современен. Эстетика постоянно меняется, но красота функциональности вечна. Несмотря на это, внешний вид Anglepoise® все же имеет несколько моментов для анализа. Эта лампа – воплощение баланса не только в ее функции, но и во внешнем виде. Я сравнила величины основания с абажуром. Основная ширина абажура равна ширине основания – это можно увидеть невооруженным глазом. Но другие 3 измерения, которые я взяла, также дублируют друг друга. Это всего лишь крохотный штрих чистой эстетики в Anglepoise®, но в любом случае, это не было сделано случайно – это было продумано. |
