A compromise between aesthetics and manufacturing

For my personal opinion, Luckhardt chair is one of the most beautiful chairs ever made of tubular steel. The continuous loop of the base and floating seat are making it look absolutely stunning.

The chair was initially designed by the Hans Luckhardt and Wassily Luckhardt brothers for the DESTA (Deutsche Stahlmöbel [eng: German steel furniture]) company, that was a Thonet’s Berlin-based competitor. Unfortunately, this masterpiece was extremely hard to manufacture. Consequently, it wasn’t affordable. For that reason it also wasn’t really mass produced, but from the other side, this same thing made the Luckhardt chair quite unique, because the way of manufacturing wasn’t trivial.

Most of the tubular steel chairs of that time were designed to be bent using 90° angles, because it was convenient for manufacturing. Luckhardt chair is bent using long arched lines combined with rounded acute angle bents. At the time of original production, both bending machine as well as a large hydraulic press were used to get the precise angles. It was a complicated process. Continuous frame also needed to be welded and hand polished. So yeah, from the manufacturing point of view, this chair is a nightmare, but from the aesthetical – it’s a symphony.

As you can see, sometimes design can be a compromise between aesthetics and manufacturing. What do you think – is the Luckhardt chair worth such efforts?
